Good morning ladies and gentlemen!  And welcome to Washington.  I am Joshua Freed, Mayor of the beautiful city of Bothell, just north of Seattle at the north end of Lake Washington. 

 

If you are a Chinese student considering an education in the United States, I have to tell you about the best place in the United States to live and go to school.  In Bothell we are very proud of our City’s history and its beautiful surroundings.  We are also very proud of the University of Washington at Bothell - the fastest-growing public institution in the state of Washington and the sixth fastest in the nation.  UW Bothell, as we call it, makes its home in our city on a beautiful campus co-located with Cascadia College.  They offer a wide variety of courses in Business, Computer Science and Software Engineering, Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, Nursing and Health Studies, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, among many others.  International students contribute global perspectives in the university’s classrooms and on their campus, and in our community.  This helps to promote the University’s commitment to fostering a community of global learners. UW Bothell recognizes the importance of adding an international component to the college experience to help students develop global skills such as adaptability, intercultural communication, and problem-solving.  So not only do they welcome students from abroad, they are also committed to doubling the number of American students who study abroad.  They are committed to increasing study abroad participation to 15% of all UW Bothell students graduating during in 2020.

 

We’re also very proud of our region and our state.  The state of Washington is a center of excellence for innovation and research, and the greater Seattle area is home to some of the world’s most iconic and entrepreneurial corporations, foundations and arts organizations.  Bothell is the location of the state’s Biomedical Device Innovation Zone.   The university takes advantage of this regional capacity for innovation and discovery by connecting students to career-building and life-long learning experiences.  Bothell graduates become regional leaders in high demand fields such as health care, technology, education, engineering, business and more.
